New Hampshire’s Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra has appointed VIRGINIA (“GINNA”) MACDONALD as its first executive director. She brings to the job more than 35 years of experience as a professional musician, educator, and music therapist. Since 2003 Macdonald has taught clarinet, saxophone, and piano, working with special-needs students and raising money for the Portsmouth Music and Arts Center. In recent years she has also taught music in the public schools in North Berwick, Maine. Macdonald has performed in the Portsmouth Symphony, New England Wind Symphony, Exeter Town Band, and various wind ensembles. A board-certified music therapist, she holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Connecticut and a master’s in music therapy and mental health counselling from Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass.
