THOM MAYES has been appointed executive director of Nevada’s Reno Chamber Orchestra. Mayes will move to Reno from the Seattle area, where he is currently CEO of the Seattle/Tacoma-based Northwest Sinfonietta chamber orchestra. He has a background as a classical performer and administrator, with a degree in double bass performance from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in arts leadership from Seattle University. Mayes previously spent three seasons as executive director of the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra in Bellingham, Washington. During his tenure the organization experienced a period of financial and artistic growth, an increase in donations from the community, and performances with soloists including Gil Shaham, James Ehnes, and Johannes Moser. He previously served as executive director of historic theaters in Washington, including the Capitol Theater in Olympia and the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon. He also worked in the administrations of the Icicle Creek Center for the Arts in Leavenworth, Washington, and Seattle Opera.
