TREVOR ORTHMANN, president of Symphony in C (Camden, N.J.), has been appointed executive director of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, effective October 1; he will succeed ELIZABETH HARE, who has been serving as interim executive director since April of this year. During his eight-year tenure in New Jersey Orthmann led several strategic-planning processes culminating in an organizational name change (from Haddonfield Symphony Orchestra to Symphony in C) and the move from Haddonfield to Camden. In 2004 the orchestra was awarded a MetLife Award for Excellence in Community Engagement by the League of American Orchestras. Prior to joining the Haddonfield Symphony Orthmann worked in marketing for the Baltimore Opera and as a teacher in Wausau, Wisconsin. He holds a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from Southern Methodist University and a master’s in arts management from Carnegie Mellon University. Also announced by the ISO were the renewal of KAREN LYNNE DEAL’s contract as music director, and the election of CAROLE M. RINGER as president for the 2009-10 season. Ringer; a board member of the orchestra since 2007, had earlier served as general manager of the Bloomington-Normal Symphony, which merged with the Springfield Symphony in 1993 to become the Illinois Symphony Orchestra.
