“The Akron Symphony Orchestra and the Gospel Meets Symphony Choir will join forces for the annual Gospel Meets Symphony concert at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 at the University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall,” writes Megan Becka in Monday’s (1/27) Cleveland.com (OH). “The Gospel Meets Symphony Choir features 190 people from 77 area churches. The groups will perform popular gospel songs such as ‘Rock-a My Soul,’ ‘Glorious Is Thy Name’ and ‘Blessed Assurance.’ Jonathon Turner will make his debut as choirmaster at the concert. For several years, Turner has been a member of the Gospel Meets Symphony rhythm section. Last season, he served as a guest conductor for the concert…. The concert also will feature selections by the Gospel Meets Symphony 2.0 Choir, the first junior gospel choir in the 25-year history of the Gospel Meets Symphony Choir. The junior choir will perform the selections ‘Long as I Got King Jesus’ and ‘Hosanna.’ ” In a press release, Turner said, “This will begin my 10th year working with the Akron Symphony and what a joyful journey it has been. I have had the enormous pleasure of serving under the leadership of Jennifer Mekel Jones and Maestro Christopher Wilkins and am honored to carry the torch forward.”
