In Tuesday’s (4/5) Birmingham News (Alabama), Michael Huebner writes, “Ninety years ago this month, the first musicians for what would become the Alabama Symphony performed at the Jefferson Theatre for the Birmingham Music Festival. To celebrate the anniversary and to help secure its financial base, the orchestra is holding a month-long fundraising campaign, titled ‘Give to the Nines.’ Before each concert in April, speakers will come forward to share their memories and explain why ASO is important to the city. ‘The ASO is an integral part of Alabama’s rich cultural history and a rising star on the national orchestral scene,’ said ASO Board President Ruffner Page. He cited the orchestral music foundation, and ‘a community that cares enough to ensure 90 more years of innovative and beautiful music.’ The fundraising effort culminates with a concert at the Symphony Volunteer Council’s Showhouse Gala on April 29, 90 years to the date after the first concert.”
