FEI XIE, second bassoon in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2008, has been named to the BSO’s principal bassoon post, effective September 2012. A native of China and a graduate of Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music, he holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Oberlin College and a master’s from Rice University, where he studied with Benjamin Kamins, former principal bassoon in the Houston Symphony. While at Oberlin, Xie performed with Ohio’s Akron, Canton, and Mansfield symphony orchestras, serving as principal bassoon in Mansfield during the orchestra’s 2003-04 season. An avid chamber musician, he has played in the Music by Candlelight Series and Sundays at Three Chamber Music Series, both in Columbia, Md., and is a founding member of the Black Sheep Bassoon Quartet.
