DAVID BUCK has been named principal flute, and JOSEPH BECKER principal percussion, at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Both musicians will officially join the orchestra at the start of its 2012-13 season on September 28. Buck was formerly principal flute with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and prior to that appointment in 2010 he spent four years as principal flute with the Oregon Symphony. He has appeared as guest principal flute with the Pittsburgh and Baltimore symphony orchestras. Buck has participated in numerous summer festivals and has served as principal flute with the Oregon Bach Festival and the Colorado Music Festival. He earned a bachelor’s degree and a graduate diploma from The Juilliard School, and began his orchestral career as associate principal flute with the Honolulu Symphony. Percussionist Joseph Becker goes to Detroit from the Jacksonville (Fla.) Symphony Orchestra. Prior to joining that orchestra in 2011 he performed regularly with the Boston Philharmonic and the Boston-based Callithumpian Consort. He received his bachelor’s degree from New England Conservatory and was a Fellow at Tanglewood Music Center in 2008 and 2009.
