Tennessee’s Knoxville Symphony Orchestra has announced eight additions to its musician roster for 2011-12. Named to the concertmaster post is GABRIEL LEFKOWITZ, 23, a violinist, composer, and conductor originally from Newton, Mass. A graduate of Columbia University, where he studied music and economics, he holds a master’s degree in violin performance from The Juilliard School and pursued further studies at the Pierre Monteux School (conducting) and Aspen Music Festival and School (film scoring). Past leadership positions include concertmaster posts at Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras and the Juilliard Orchestra. Three other section leaders were also appointed: EBONEE THOMAS, principal flute; PETER CAIN, principal clarinet; and JEFFERY WHALEY, principal horn. GORDON TSAI, a native of Taiwan with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon and a master’s from the University of Nevada, has been named associate concertmaster effective in January 2012. SARA MATAYOSHI has been named to a permanent post in the violin section, and RUTH BACON and DIANE ZELICKMAN to one-year positions in that section.
