At the Los Angeles Philharmonic, GAIL SAMUEL has been promoted to chief operating officer, effective November 19. She succeeds ARVIND MANOCHA, whose appointment as president and CEO of Virginia’s Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts was announced October 12 in Who’s In. Samuel first joined the LA Phil staff in 2001 as orchestra manager, and subsequently filled a variety of key posts including her current one, vice president and general manager, Philharmonic and production. Prior to the LA Phil she held positions at the Minnesota Orchestra, Yale University, Tanglewood Music Festival, and the Young Musicians Foundation. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Samuel is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she studied violin and earned bachelor’s degrees in music and psychology as well as an MBA. Since 2009 she has served on the Board of Governors of USC’s Thornton School of Music.
