Recently announced faculty appointments at Ohio’s Oberlin Conservatory include MICHAEL STRAUSS, associate professor of viola and chamber music; and TRACY ROWELL, teacher of double bass. For the past eighteen years Strauss has served as principal violist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras across the U.S. A former member of the Fine Arts Quartet and a chamber-music collaborator with numerous internationally renowned artists, Strauss is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. Rowell holds the principal bass post at CityMusic Cleveland, and served previously as assistant principal bass in the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa. Ont.) She has performed with such organizations as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, North Carolina Symphony, and Carmel Bach Festival. Her teaching experience includes faculty posts at the University of Akron and Cleveland Institute of Music. Rowell is a graduate of Rice University. She received her master’s degree from Boston University as a student of Boston Symphony Orchestra Principal Bass Edwin Barker.
