Composer Julia Wolfe and the American Contemporary Music Ensemble were honored on May 21 at the 16th Annual Concert Music Awards of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, held at Merkin Concert Hall in New York. Winners of 2015 Morton Gould Young Composer Awards, who share $45,000 in prize money, were Anahita Abbasi, Timo Andres, Katherine Balch, Yihan Chen, Jaehyuck Choi, TJ Cole, Erin Graham, Saad Haddad, Brian Heim, David Hertzberg, Andrew Hsu, Jay Hurst, Evan Ingalls, Sun Bin Kim, Scott Lee, Austin O’Rourke, Nina Shekhar, Shen Yiwen, Daniel Silliman, Gabriella Smith, Andrew Stock, Jason Thorpe Buchanan, and Gabriel Zucker. Also receiving ASCAP Foundation awards were Emily Bear (age 13), Michael Jon Bennett (16), JP Redmond (15), Karalyn Schubring (15), and Renata Vallecillo (15). Composer/conductor/broadcast journalist Bill McGlaughlin hosted the ceremony, and presenting composers included Lisa Bielawa, Charles Fussell, James Matheson, Paul Moravec, and Robert Sirota. The American Contemporary Music Ensemble, celebrating its tenth year in 2014-15, was honored for its commitment to music of American composers. Julia Wolfe, a founder of Bang on a Can, is winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in Music for Anthracite Fields.
