The Hermitage Artist Retreat in Englewood, Florida and Colorado’s Aspen Music Festival and School have awarded the inaugural Hermitage Prize to Pacific Northwest-based composer Patrick Harlin. Harlin, who is currently pursuing his DMA from the University of Michigan, received the award on August 11 in Aspen’s Harris Concert Hall. The award includes a stipend of $1,000 and an artist residency of six weeks that can be taken over a two-year span at the Hermitage Artist Retreat. The award announcement was made from the Harris stage by Robert Spano, music director of the Aspen Festival and School; Alan Fletcher, Aspen’s president and CEO; and Bruce E. Rodgers, executive director of the Hermitage. Harlin was selected by a panel of six composers, including Spano and Fletcher; and Aspen’s composers-in-residence John Corigliano, John Harbison, Steven Stucky, and George Tsontakis. The Hermitage Artist Retreat is a nonprofit institution supporting professionals in the areas of visual art, music and drama through artist residences and awards such as the Greenfield Prize, an annual $30,000 commission.
