“Classical music has a diversity problem,” states Karyn Greer in a Tuesday (4/9) news segment on television station CBS46 (Atlanta). “According to the League of American Orchestras, less than two percent of orchestral musicians in the U.S. are African American, and less than three percent are Latino.” The segment reports on the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Talent Development Program, an initiative for black and Latinx musicians in grades 5 to 12 who seek advanced training and careers in classical music. The program is currently marking its 25th year. The report includes interviews with co-founders Azira Gonzalez Hill and Mary C. Gramling, and cellist Jaia Alli (in photo), who participates in the Talent Development Program.
