BSO OrchKids, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s free music-education and mentorship program established in 2008, will hold a three-day workshop, “Community Engagement through Music Education,” from July 13 to 15. Sessions led by OrchKids Director of Artistic Programming Dan Trahey, at Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and Luckerman Bundy and Mary Anne Winterling Elementary Schools in Baltimore, will be aimed at developing a toolkit for teachers new to the El Sistema movement. Among the topics to be covered are classroom management, creative music-making, and how to inspire community involvement. Participants will work with OrchKids teaching faculty and students for concerts on July 13 and 17. OrchKids served more than 250 pre-K through fifth-grade students at two Baltimore public schools during the 2010-11 school year, four days a week from 3:30 to 6:15 p.m. For more information on the OrchKids workshop, contact Cheryl Goodman at cgoodman@bsomusic.org or 410-783-8025.
