Thursday (11/3) on WalesOnline, Gareth Evans writes, “Schoolchildren have the chance to experience classical music concerts from the comfort of their classroom, thanks to a unique project by BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The organisation’s education and community outreach department has distributed teacher resource packs to every special school, unit and primary school in Wales. To celebrate the release of the packs, the orchestra is this week performing a series of special concerts to more than 4,000 children in Tenby and Cardiff. The resource packs are the latest stage of a highly-successful and innovative programme devised for pupils from special schools, units and primaries. It is believed to be the first project of its scale in Europe, which in the past 12 months has given more than 5,000 children from across Wales the chance to attend an orchestral concert tailored to their needs. The new packs are aimed at supporting music teaching and are particularly useful in schools with no specialist music teacher. They include a DVD and CD of a special concert recorded earlier in the year, plus a booklet of teachers’ notes which introduce each piece of music and suggests further ideas for performing in the classroom.”
