In Wednesday’s (10/30) New York Times, Allan Kozinn writes that the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, “having offered adventurous crossover programs in its Casual Concert Lounge series in recent years, … is collaborating with the lounge’s resident D.J., Johann Fanger, on a remixing competition, ‘Into a New World— Dvořák 24 Loops,’ in which contestants will produce their own remixed version of the Scherzo from Dvořák’s ‘New World’ Symphony…. The competition will provide remixers with raw material in the form of stretches of the score and its component instrumental lines, recorded for the contest by the orchestra, with Cornelius Meister conducting. Remixers are free to re-arrange these components, or loops, as they see fit. The loops will be available on a web page for the contest on Thursday. Entries will be accepted through Jan. 31, and a jury that includes Mr. Meister and members of Brandt Brauer Frick, a Berlin techno group, will select three winners in February. The winning pieces will be presented at an event on March 3 and made available on recordings later that month.”
