The Boise Philharmonic will hold a celebration at the Boise Train Depot on September 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. to launch its 60th season, featuring performances by Boise Phil Principal Oboe Lauren Blackerby and Associate Principal Trumpet Drew Ziemba. The Train Depot location was chosen as a nod to the orchestra’s upcoming performance of Zhou Tian’s Transcend, a co-commission with twelve other orchestras commemorating the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad 150 years ago; the score will be performed in Boise on October 18 and 19. Eric Garcia is music director of the Boise Philharmonic, which in addition to public performances operates programs for students, families, and community members. The organization began in 1885 as the Boise Civic Symphony, and became the Boise Philharmonic in 1960. The organization today conducts partnerships with correctional institutions, veterans’ residences, nursing homes, hospitals, homeless shelters, and refugee communities; performs in non-traditional venues; and produces its own Annual Downtown Boise Pub Crawl.
