Wednesday (4/18) on the Huffington Post, Amy Lee writes, “Brooklyn Philharmonic’s Beethoven Remix Project challenged listeners to take the final movement of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony and remix it into something new. Brooklyn-based DJ Eddie Marz’s winning remix, dubbed ‘Ill Harmonic’ takes two of Beethoven’s themes from the finale and layers them to create an anxious tune that reimagines the classical masterpiece as a densely rhythmic jam. The Eroica, Beethoven’s third symphony, is an important piece to the Brooklyn Philharmonic. The company performed the work at its debut concert in 1857 and has been playing variations on it all through their season. Tying together the Brooklyn Phil’s contemporary philosophy and its early history, Marz’s remix will be arranged by composer (and 2012 Pulitzer Prize finalist) Andrew Norman to be performed by an orchestra at a free concert this June in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, which will also feature the hip-hop musician Yasiin Bey (the artist formerly known as Mos Def). And Marz has taken inspiration from the project as well—the DJ is currently working on a 15-song hip-hop compilation due June 1, also called ‘Ill Harmonic,’ which will feature various Brooklyn MC’s using more samples from the Eroica.”
