Colin Jacobsen and Eric Jacobsen—founders of string quartet Brooklyn Rider and The Knights chamber orchestra—are among the 50 recipients of $50,000 unrestricted grants from United States Artists through its USA Fellows program. The other six winners in the music category include jazz musician and composer Jack DeJohnette, traditional Irish musician and composer Joanie Madden, and Edward White, drummer and founder of the River City Drum Corps in Kentucky. The annual USA Fellows program also awards grants in architecture and design; crafts and traditional arts; dance; literature; media; theater arts; and visual arts. Among the non-music recipients in 2012 are dancer/choreographer Trisha Brown (dance), novelist Annie Proulx (literature); and playwright and opera librettist David Henry Hwang (theater arts). In addition to its USA Fellows program, United States Artists raises money for artists through USA Projects, a web-based microphilanthropy initiative that provides a support network and education program for artists and offers artists access to support from its matching fund program.
