Dennis Russell Davies will lead the Bruckner Orchester Linz tonight in a performance of the original 1874 version of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City. The Austrian orchestra was founded in the early 1800s and performs frequently at home and abroad; this is the ensemble’s second U.S. tour. The symphony will be performed as the second half of a program that also features Philip Glass’s Violin Concerto, with soloist Renaud Capuçon; the concerto was Glass’s first concert work for orchestra and was commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra, of which Davies was the founding conductor. The original Bruckner symphony did not receive a premiere immediately after being written; its first performance, in Vienna in 1881, was a revised version with a different scherzo and finale, which continued to be used for many years afterward. The 1874 version was reconstructed and made public in 1975. Davies and the Bruckner Orchester Linz recently recorded the complete Bruckner symphonies, released in Europe this August on the Sony BMG label.
