The Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation has awarded three $10,000 grants to orchestras and conductors to support career development of emerging conductors. For the 2009-10 season, the Alabama Symphony will receive a grant in support of associate conductor Yaniv Attar; the Kansas City Symphony in support of assistant conductor Steven Jarvi; and the Louisville Orchestra in support of assistant conductor Jason Weinberger. This is the seventh year the foundation has given awards for emerging conductors; under the program, the recipient orchestra or opera company receives $7,500 and the emerging conductor receives $2,500 for projects that further his or her career, such as attendance at conductor-training and mentoring sessions. The panel reviewing this year’s applicants consisted of Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation trustees, music writer Patrick Smith, and Jesse Rosen, president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras. The annual program aims to highlight the importance of assistant conductor positions as essential mentoring and learning experiences for emerging conductors.
