The California Symphony has announced details of its 2009-10 season, which encompasses four pairs of concerts from October to May at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, under Music Director Barry Jekowsky. The season-opening concerts will feature visual-motion artist Michael Moschen, whose “choreography” will be part of the orchestra’s performance of Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite and Mercury Interlude, a piece by Mason Bates, the orchestra’s composer in residence. Two January concerts will feature political satirist Will Durst narrating Copland’s Lincoln Portrait; the March concerts will feature John Adams’s Common Tones in Simple Time as well as Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 with 14-year-old soloist Chad Hoopes. The final concerts of the season will feature a world premiere by Bates, as well as 14-year-old musician Sarina Zhang, who will perform as pianist (Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1) and as cellist (Tchaikovsky Pezzo Capriccioso for Cello and Orchestra). The orchestra will also perform symphonies of Sibelius, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Dvorák, and Beethoven during the season.
