Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute has announced PlayUSA, a pilot program providing grants and support for instrumental music education projects in the U.S. Three orchestras have been selected for programs designed to reach low-income and underserved students: the Columbus All City Orchestra from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, in Ohio; the Tocando After School Music Program from the El Paso Symphony Orchestra in Texas; and Music for Life from the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Grants totaling $100,000 will be split by the three partner organizations; the grants may be used to underwrite teaching fees for music instruction; to purchase or rental of musical instruments and instrumental repair; and for other program costs. For PlayUSA’s pilot year, Carnegie Hall invited orchestras across the country that already partner with the Weill Music Institute on its Link Up music education program for grades 3-5 to apply.
