As part of the Houston Symphony’s celebration of its centennial season, on July 13 the orchestra presented a free thirteen-hour Day of Music at Jones Hall. The day began with a family concert at 10 a.m., led by Associate Conductor Robert Franz with the participation of pianist Patrick Pan, narrator Milo Hamilton, vocalist/guitarist Chris Hadfield, the Westside High School Inertia Dance Company, and Pearl Hall Elementary Children’s Choir. The day concluded with an 8 p.m. concert led by guest conductor Cristian Macelaru, featuring the Suite from Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, Ravel’s “Alborada del gracioco” from Miroirs, and the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, featuring soloist Moran Katz, winner of the 2013 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition. Among the musicians who performed throughout the day were the Houston Brass Band, the Blue Steel Drum Ensemble, Mariachi MECA, and the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra Brass Quintet.
