“Last May, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason … played quite an enviable gig: The Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,” writes James Bennett II on Thursday (9/6) at New York classical station WQXR. “Q: Has your life changed this summer? Kanneh-Mason: One of my all-time main goals has been to bring the music that I love to as many people as I can, and playing at the wedding was a chance to do that. Q: Were those music choices yours? Kanneh-Mason: The first two pieces that I played [by Maria Theresia von Paradis and Fauré] were pieces that I suggested to the royal couple…. They requested … the Ave Maria … and I was happy to perform that. Q: Tell me about the projects you’re working on currently. Kanneh-Mason: I’m working on lots of new repertoire…. I do a lot of work with a charity called London Music Masters, who give mainly violin lessons, but also cello lessons to primary school children…. The reason I got into classical music was because I was introduced to it from a young age…. That’s also one of the best ways someone can become interested or involved in this genre of music.”
