The Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras, based in Lexington, has announced the launch of an intensive music-training program for second- and third-grade students beginning in August. The founder and director of the program, North Limestone MusicWorks, is Rachel Hockenberry, a French hornist now completing her residency in the 2012-13 Sistema Fellows Program at New England Conservatory. In MusicWorks—modeled on El Sistema, the Venezuelan program that promotes social change through music education—20 to 30 students from Arlington Elementary School will receive instruction two hours per day, five days a week during the 2013-14 academic year. Students will be selected through a student and family interview process, and the program will meet at Embrace Church, across the street from the school. The newly formed North Limestone Cultural Development Corporation is a founding partner of the program, and the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras will work with several community partners to acquire instruments for the program. MusicWorks joins two other community-based programs of the CKYO: Friends in Music, providing private lessons and mentoring for middle-school students; and CKYO in the Schools, which performs free concerts at schools in Lexington’s outlying counties.
