In Sunday’s (6/15) Post & Courier (Charleston, South Carolina; subscription required), Adam Parker writes that the Charleston Symphony Orchestra has announced that it will help “fill the summer void” after the Spoleto festivals conclude in late spring by adding “three chamber music concerts at the Dock Street Theatre, part of a newly announced summer series. The series begins Saturday with an hour-long performance featuring CSO Concertmaster Yuriy Bekker, clarinetist Charles Messersmith and pianist Ghadi Shayban,” of works by Fauré, Brahms, and Khachaturian. On July 11, horn player Brandon Nichols will assemble a group of brass players to perform music featuring traditional and baroque instruments, as well as alphorns…. The last concert, on Aug. 16, will feature Bekker, cellist Damian Kremer, violist Alexander Agrest and guest violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv performing string quartets by Samuel Barber and Felix Mendelssohn.… ‘We are thrilled to feature musicians from our orchestra as well as some stellar guest artists,’ CSO Executive Director Michael Smith said in a statement…. Bekker said five months of musical downtime is too long for both patrons and players.… Not everybody leaves town for the entire summer, he said. And many out-of-towners visiting Charleston might be interested in attending a performance.”
