A report in Wednesday’s (11/23) Charleston Business Journal (South Carolina) states, “The Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s series-opening concerts surpassed goals and brought in record revenue. The opening concert of the 2011-2012 Masterworks Series, featuring pianist Emanuel Ax, brought in more ticket revenue than any concert in the Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s history. The Nov. 12 concert had 2,300 people in attendance at the Gaillard Municipal Auditorium. ‘We began our season with more subscribers than we’ve seen since the 1990’s and with more subscription dollars per concert,’ said Daniel Beckley, executive director. ‘Given the current economic climate and where we’ve come from, this represents resounding public support, reinforcing that the Charleston Symphony Orchestra is a vital cultural resource to this community.’ The symphony’s two other series openers also surpassed single-ticket revenue and attendance goals. The Pops series opened on Nov. 4 at Gaillard Municipal Auditorium with Broadway’s golden age; and the new, three-concert Chamber Orchestra Series opened Nov. 15, at the Dock Street Theatre with a near-sellout crowd.” Read SymphonyNOW’s coverage of the Charleston Symphony’s recent turnaround.
