The Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra’s 2015 season will open July 2 with Rossen Milanov, its new music director, leading Theofanidis’s Rainbow Body, “Nimrod” from Elgar’s Enigma Variations, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, and Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, with pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk. Among highlights of the festival through August 25 will be the commissioned work Meditations on Raising Boys, a collaboration between composer/violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain and spoken-word artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph. Also planned are a preview performance of Wynton Marsalis’s first violin concerto, with soloist Nicola Benedetti, prior to the work’s world premiere in November by the London Symphony Orchestra; and two performances of Carmina Burana, a collaboration among the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, Charlotte Ballet, Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus, Rochester Oratorio Society, and Chautauqua School of Dance, directed by Marty W. Merkley, Chautauqua’s retiring vice president and director of programming. The Chautauqua Symphony was founded in 1929 and annually performs 22 concerts over nine weeks in the Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater, in western New York.
