The Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative has announced the first group of 50 participants in its training curriculum, which is designed to prepare young Chicago-area musicians from traditionally underrepresented communities to successfully audition into music schools. The musicians were chosen following an intensive audition process, and range from sixth-graders to high school seniors. Members of the inaugural class will perform in shared solo recitals in the Chicago area on October 25, December 12, February 11, 2020, April 21, 2020, and May 17, 2020. The curriculum includes private lessons; monthly mentorship for the entire family; written and verbal feedback from professional musicians; participation in monthly seminars; free tickets to professional orchestra concerts; and financial support for tuition fees, college visits, and trial lessons, ACT/SAT prep courses, and instrument repair. The Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative launched in 2018 with seven participating organizations: the Merit School of Music, Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras, Chicago High School for the Arts, Chicago Sinfonietta, Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, DePaul University School of Music, and Ravinia Festival.
