For its March 12 and 14 percussion-themed concerts in Naperville and Chicago, Illinois, the Chicago Sinfonietta is inviting audiences to make their own percussion instruments, before the concerts and during intermission. The instruments will be created from recycled materials and found objects donated by organizations including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and The WasteShed. Sinfonietta Music Director Mei-Ann Chen will lead the concerts, which will include William Grant Still’s Festive Overture, Ricardo Lorenz’s Pataruco: Concerto for Venezuelan Maracas and Orchestra, George Chadwick’s Symphonic Sketches: Jubilee and Noel, and Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto, featuring CSO principal percussionist Cynthia Yeh. The concert will conclude with Ginastera’s Estancia Dances, in which the audience is invited to join the orchestra using their own percussion instruments. On March 6, Chicago Sinfonietta Principal Percussionist Jeff Handley gave a free West African drumming performance at the DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville, which partnered with the Sinfonietta to hold a weekend of percussion-themed events for children.
