In Monday’s (1/13) Chicago Sun-Times, Erica Thompson writes, “Flutist, singer and composer Nathalie Joachim can trace her musical tastes back to her childhood. At 10 years old, she was darting between flute lessons at a pre-college program at Juilliard and Tower Records … ‘I was that strange kid who was listening to Bach just as much as I was listening to [DJ] Roni Size,’ said Joachim … That fusion can be heard in Flutronix, her genre-blending act with flutist and composer Allison Loggins-Hull. The musicians will join the Chicago Sinfonietta for the ensemble’s annual MLK Tribute Concert on Jan. 20 at the Auditorium Theatre [with] an additional concert at Naperville’s Wentz Hall on Jan. 19. The performances will feature the duo’s four-movement, electro-acoustic piece ‘Black Being,’ which includes text by North Carolina Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green. The unconventional concert will showcase Joachim and Loggins-Hull’s creativity as composers while communicating a message about the joys and challenges of Black womanhood…. The show is a homecoming for Loggins-Hull, a Chicago native, and Joachim, who lived in the city while playing with contemporary classical group Eighth Blackbird. The Arts Club of Chicago co-commissioned ‘Black Being’ with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.”
