“A string quartet made up of Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra musicians has been invited to perform during the memorial service for acclaimed author, poet, activist and humanitarian Dr. Maya Angelou” on Saturday at 10 a.m., writes Janelle Gelfand in Thursday’s (6/5) Cincinnati Enquirer. “The service … [at] Wake Forest University … will be streamed live on the university’s website…. CSO president Trey Devey said on Thursday that Dr. Angelou and the orchestra developed a bond when she visited Cincinnati in November to narrate Aaron Copland’s ‘Lincoln Portrait’ for the inaugural concerts of music director Louis Langrée…. Devey said, ‘It’s one of the greatest honors during my time with the orchestra to have our history intertwined with the legacy of Dr. Angelou.’ The string quartet … also will collaborate with country music singer Lee Ann Womack on her song ‘I Hope You Dance’ during the memorial service. Dr. Angelou taught at Wake Forest University for more than three decades. Cincinnati arts patron Otto Budig is making flight arrangements for the quartet, Devey said. The collaboration with the Cincinnati Symphony was one of her last artistic projects. Dr. Angelou, the author of ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ and many other works, died on May 28 at age 86.”
