“Education at the Cleveland Orchestra will remain an active mission, thanks, in large part, to the Nord family,” writes Zachary Lewis in Tuesday’s (8/20) Plain Dealer (Cleveland, Ohio). “On Tuesday, the orchestra announced a gift of $2.5 million from The Eric & Jane Nord Family Fund expressly intended to bolster programming for students. The gift, which also supports the orchestra’s ‘Sound for the Centennial’ endowment campaign, represents one of the largest donations the group ever has received on behalf of music education…. Among the many initiatives to be supported by the Nord gift are education concerts, outreach appearances, neighborhood residencies, the ‘Learning Through Music’ program, and the ‘Under 18s Free’ ticket offer…. Also assisted by the gift: adult education efforts such as pre-concert lectures and music study groups. ‘We’re at such a critical point with schools right now,’ said Joan Katz Napoli [the orchestra’s director of education and community programs]. ‘These kinds of programs provide a level of access that many schools just aren’t able to offer.’ The Nord gift comes in two installments. The first consists of $250,000 for immediate use in educational programming. The second is a pledge to create a $2.25 million endowment fund dedicated to preserving educational efforts into the future.”
