In Sunday’s (3/2) Denver Post, Ray Mark Rinaldi writes that in the 2014-15 season the Colorado Symphony Orchestra “will take on challenging music with a good attitude and a bit of dare. It’s very much a Western mentality…. The lineup has its Euro-centric door-busters, Beethoven’s 9th, the Mozart ‘Requiem,’ and Mahler’s 6th. But it treks into new frontiers. The musicians devote evenings to the music of current-day composers Nico Muhly and pop bassist Victor Wooten. They will spend two weekends presenting an ‘American Festival,’ with composers like Kevin Puts. ‘In a way this is a test, and we’re going to see how the community reacts,’ said Tony Pierce, who oversees the CSO’s artistic planning.… One weekend, titled ‘Silver Ainomäe Plays Dvorák,’ stars the in-house cellist, while another is built around the premiere of local percussionist William Hill’s ‘The Raven.’ … The season will see the premiere of a ‘Geek Concerts’ series with music related to the ‘Animaniacs’ animated TV series, the big ‘Comic Con’ convention that comes to town in November and composer Danny Elfman’s music for films by director Tim Burton.… The season will also see more of Andrew Litton, who changed his title recently from music advisor to music director. He’ll conduct a total of eight weekends.”
