“Xian Zhang has extended her contract as music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra for an additional four years, securing her post, which began in 2016, through the 2023-24 season, just one year beyond the orchestra’s centenary,” writes Nicholas Beard in Monday’s (6/11) MusicalAmerica.com (subscription required). “Zhang’s tenure has received accolades, for her programming choices, focus on diversity, and eagerness to reach out to the communities the orchestra serves. In his comments, concertmaster Eric Wyrick said … ‘She is all about energy and connection with musicians and audiences … I’m very happy that she’s renewed her contract; it’s great for us to continue working together.’ Since becoming the first woman appointed to the conducting staff of the New York Philharmonic, in 2002, Zhang has been a regular guest conductor of the London Symphony and Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and has appeared with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony, and others. Upcoming engagements include return visits to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and debuts with the San Francisco Symphony, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, and Royal Philharmonic, among others.”
