In Thursday’s (4/9) Dallas Morning News, Scott Cantrell reports, “Jonathan Pell, longtime director of artistic administration at the Dallas Opera, has been promoted to artistic director. He’s the first person to hold the title since Nicola Rescigno, one of the company’s co-founders, who resigned in 1990. … Pell has done most of the company’s casting for years and is well known in the business for keeping track of up-and-coming singers. He has been a judge in opera competitions in the United States and abroad and presented master classes on vocal auditions. … Naming Pell the artistic director suggests the company may seek more of a business manager and fundraiser for the general director’s position, which [John T.] Cody is filling on an interim basis. Some companies have designated the two top jobs as managing director and artistic director. But Cody said no decision has been made in that direction, and that Pell’s appointment is ‘not really connected at all’ to the general director search.”
