In Wednesday’s (4/8) Dallas Morning News, Scott Cantrell writes, “The Dallas Symphony Orchestra is adding $50 million to its endowment fund, thanks to donors matching a $25 million challenge grant from the O’Donnell Foundation. Income from the endowment supports performances and other activities. The DSO’s O’Donnell match comes three months after the Dallas Opera completed its own $25 million challenge from the Dallas foundation. Founded in 1957 by the late Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr., the foundation supports math, science and the arts. Last December, it announced a $60 million commitment to a new interdisciplinary energies program at Southern Methodist University. ‘We are thrilled that the DSO community has rallied to meet and exceed the O’Donnell Foundation’s challenge grant, which will help to underwrite the DSO’s future for decades to come,’ said a statement from foundation president and CEO Bill Solomon. ‘During their lifetimes, Peter and Edith O’Donnell provided important support to the Dallas Symphony, largely anonymously, because they understood its great importance to our city.’ ”
