In Thursday’s (7/7) The Sun-News (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina), Lorena Anderson writes, “After a dozen years of discussions, planning and failed fund-raising efforts by arts groups, the city of Myrtle Beach is considering building a performing arts center. ‘We’re growing as a community, and this is an amenity we do not have,’ said city spokesman Mark Kruea. But some in the arts community are not happy with the city’s latest proposal to get the money. At last week’s City Council workshop, Councilwoman Susan Grissom Means proposed a special election in February to ask residents if they support a 3-mill property tax increase to cover the debt on up to $10 million in bonds to build the performing arts complex at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The city would use architectural designs the Myrtle Beach Performing Arts Center group commissioned and build an 850-seat theater that would be run by the convention center. … ‘We want to raise part of the money and be partners with the city,’ said Rita Siegal Levine, president of the performing arts center board, on Wednesday.”
