The Des Moines Symphony and Academy has received $150,000 from the Gardner & Florence Call Cowles Foundation to establish an initiative that will connect world-class musicians with young central Iowa musicians. In the Cowles Collaborative Artist Program, students will have the opportunity to learn from Des Moines Symphony guest artists; collaborate with Des Moines Symphony musicians through increased coaching and mentoring opportunities with the Symphony Academy’s Youth Orchestras and Honors Ensembles; and perform in one of four Youth Orchestras, including a new youth orchestra offering increased ensemble participation and mentoring opportunities for the youngest musicians. The initiative bolsters the orchestra’s existing music education programs, which include the Symphony Academy’s three youth orchestras.
