On Sunday, July 9, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert at Orchestra Hall, which will be live-streamed as part of the DSO’s “Live from Orchestra Hall” series. The concert represents the orchestra’s kickoff performance before it departs for a July 14-29 tour to Asia. During the tour, Music Director Leonard Slatkin will lead eleven concerts in Japan and China. In Japan, the orchestra will perform in Tokyo, Toyota City, Osaka, and Fukui. For the DSO’s performances in China, its first in that country, the orchestra will perform in Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuhan, Changsha, and Chongqing. Repertoire will include Copland’s Symphony No. 3, Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Bernstein’s Candide Overture, Cindy McTee’s Double Play, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Korngold’s Violin Concerto, and Takemitsu’s Far Calls.
