An Associated Press report posted Thursday (5/30) on the WXYZ/ABC News channel 7 website states, “The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is closing out this season’s classical series with some Motor City-inspired grit and grace. The concerts Friday and Saturday at Orchestra Hall include the world premiere of ‘Rouge River Transfiguration’ by Missy Mazzoli. She received the orchestra’s Elaine Lebenbom Annual Memorial Award for Female Composers in 2011. Mazzoli says in a statement she ‘fell in love with Detroit’ in 2010 while touring with her band, Victoire. She returned to her New York home, listened to 1980s Detroit techno music and studied early 20th century photographs by Charles Sheeler of Ford Motor Co.’s River Rouge Plant. She says her piece ‘is about the transformation of grit and noise into something massive, resonant and unexpected.’ She will participate in a free discussion before Saturday’s performance.”
