Conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the new music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has been named recipient of the 2010 Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The award carries with it a $75,000 cash prize, plus a campus residency, which will take place in April 2010. During his MIT residency, Dudamel will visit the MIT Media Lab and conduct an open rehearsal with the MIT Symphony Orchestra; he will also participate in a panel discussion with professors John Harbison and Tod Machover, moderated by journalist Maria Hinojosa. Previous winners of the McDermott Award include architects Santiago Calatrava and Diller + Scofidio, writer Junot Diaz, playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, and artist Isaac Julien. The award, established in 1974, honors Eugene McDermott, cofounder of Texas Instruments and a longtime friend and benefactor of MIT.
