The Hollywood Bowl’s fourteen-week 2012 summer series will feature “Americas & Americans,” a two-week festival directed by Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Director Gustavo Dudamel. Artists scheduled to perform with the LA Phil during the festival include Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra, Venezuelan-Argentine pianist Sergio Tiempo, and Panamanian songwriter and jazz/salsa musician Rubén Blades. Tenor Plácido Domingo will perform an evening of Latin songs and opera arias with the orchestra, and other orchestral programs will feature works by Moncayo, Márquez, Piazzolla, Estévez, Ginastera, and Copland. Other Hollywood Bowl music highlights for 2012 include Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, led by Leonard Slatkin, with video imagery incorporating Gustav Klimt’s famous Beethoven frieze; a celebration of Paramount Pictures’ 100th anniversary with music from The Godfather trilogy, Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol, and the 1927 silent film Wings, with music by John Stepan Zamecnik, a onetime student of Antonín Dvorák at the Prague Conservatory and concertmaster in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; and Verdi’s Rigoletto, with Dudamel leading the LA Phil with Željko Lučić in the title role, David Lomelí as the Duke, and Olga Peretyatko as Gilda.
