The Elgin Symphony Orchestra in Illinois is one of 24 nonprofit organizations that have joined together during for a variety of Elgin-based events during the 2009 holiday season. The ESO will perform its popular December holiday concerts at the Hemmens Theatre in Elgin, after having performed them for the prior three years at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, about twelve miles east of Elgin. “This city-wide initiative comes at an appropriate time,” said Dr. Dale J. Lonis, the orchestra’s chief executive officer. “Our theme this year is ‘Building Community Through the Arts.’ … People are doing things closer to home this year, and we are thrilled to be involved in this community-focused partnership, giving our concert an appropriate homecoming.” Other participating nonprofit organizations include Ecker Center for Mental Health, Elgin Children’s Chorus, Elgin Choral Union, Elgin Community College Visual & Performing Arts Center, and Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS). Other local holiday events include jazz concerts, holiday tea with the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra Brass Choir, and “A Creole Christmas” with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
