In Thursday’s (6/16) Post-Standard (Syracuse, New York), Melinda Johnson writes, “Symphony Syracuse, comprised of musicians of the former Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, has announced an eight-concert summer season. The new symphony was committed to performing concerts traditionally part of the SSO’s summer schedule, said Jon Garland, chair of the board of Symphony Syracuse Foundation. Symphony Syracuse was formed in May after the SSO board voted to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It describes itself as a ‘lifeboat organization,’ allowing musicians to perform concerts until a permanent orchestra is organized, said Garland. … The new symphony is presenting the traditional July 4 concert at the New York State Fairgrounds. … The concert will honor veterans of the U.S. armed services. … The remaining concerts will include a program of masterpieces by Mozart, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Elgar, light classics and popular music. Performances are free with the exception the July 29 concert in Inlet, a fundraiser for the Fulton Chain of Lakes Performing Arts Council. … Most of the SSO’s core musicians—about 63—will perform in the summer concerts. Daniel Hege, music director of the former SSO, will conduct the concerts July 1 in Watertown and July 4 at the fairgrounds.”
