The Eugene Symphony in Oregon has announced that its 2013-14 season will include the second installment of its biannual “Counterpoint” community-engagement initiative, with two November concerts dates and associated events planned around the theme of love and fate. For the first concert, devoted to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the orchestra will perform music from the Prokofiev ballet, woven together with scenes from the play, performed by actors from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. A second program devoted to Porgy and Bess will feature the orchestra in performances of the Gershwin opera, with soloists and chorus. For additional community-wide events to be announced, the orchestra will partner with local arts, educational, and cultural organizations. The “Counterpoint” initiative had its inaugural year in 2011, with a theme of “war and peace,” keyed to the 150th anniversary of the start of the U.S. Civil War and the tenth anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001.
