At its annual convention in New York City, the National Flute Association will honor Sir James Galway with a Lifetime Achievement Award, its highest honor. During the convention, from August 13 to 16, Galway also will give a master class and perform a recital with his wife, Lady Jeanne Galway. A gala concert will feature performances by Jeffrey Khaner, principal flute of the Philadelphia Orchestra; Davide Formisano, principal flute of the La Scala Orchestra; and Denis Bouriakov, principal flute of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Flutists also scheduled to perform include Michael Parloff, Paula Robison, Fenwick Smith, Nancy Toff, Kate Clark, Ian Clarke, Linda Chatterton, and Carol Wincenc. Other events include a Telemann-a-thon and a late-night reading of a Tallis motet for 40 flutes. On August 14, Galway will lead an effort to break the Guinness World Record for World’s Largest Flute Ensemble. The current record of 1,701 participants was set in Germany in 2007. In celebration of his 70th birthday (December 8, 2009), Galway commissioned a medley of his favorite works, including “Danny Boy,” to be performed at the event, which is free and open to the public.
