In an opinion piece in Sunday’s (7/24) Courier-Journal (Louisville, Kentucky), former Louisville Orchestra CEO Brad Broecker writes, “Not a day goes by that I don’t find someone who asks ‘what is going to happen to the Louisville Orchestra?’ … In a nutshell, I believe the players need to accept the economic reality that exists in 2011 and the need to operate with a realistic employment plan and a balanced budget that is not dependent on bequests and crossed fingers. As a community, we all need to recognize the absolute need for 21st century innovation that will allow for reinvention of our orchestra in a way that will revitalize passion for its success and reverse the trend of declining audiences. … To make the budget work, [current CEO Robert Birman] has proposed an innovative three-tiered structure of players that will retain 71 individuals but for varying weeks of work between each tier. For the moment, this will mean less work per individual than in the past. The good news for the community is that if this plan were in effect, not one concert or service would have had to be sacrificed.”
