The Fourteenth Van Cliburn International Piano competition, the first since the death of its founder and namesake in February, takes place this year from May 29 to June 9 at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas. Thirty pianists will compete during the competition, with performances that can be heard in person; broadcast live on the large video screen at Van Cliburn Recital Hall, across the street from Bass Performance Hall; and streamed live and on demand at Cliburn.org. Free events include lunchtime recitals by preliminary and semifinal round competitors; a critics symposium moderated by Scott Cantrell of the Dallas Morning News; a public conversation with conductor Leonard Slatkin, hosted by arts journalist Fred Child; and a jury symposium moderated by John Giordano, chairman of the competition jury. Several festival components encourage the active involvement of audiences, including the Twitter feeds @TheCliburn or #Cliburn2013; a daily audience vote, with results tallied on the competition’s final day to choose the winner of the $2,500 audience award; and a competition blog at Cliburn.org. Events will also be broadcast, including on American Public Media’s Performance Today radio program, on WRR Classical radio 101.1 FM, and on television on Fort Worth City Cable.
